CLASS GA

Ten objects from Ossel, specified to the stitch and not yet cut. Nine are numbered editions and one was made once.

Class GA The finding

A coat had to be hand-woven with an accident in it, witnessed, and a household was entitled to find that fault before you sat down. Most of them did it with their hands, at the door, while you stood there.

Worn under the shirt

Not of the ten

Three things the country wears under its shirts. None of them is one of the ten, and none of them carries an accession.

Worn at the breastbone.

The stone

A sea-worn stone from the quarry at the Head, drilled once, on a waxed linen cord. It comes from Rota House with a person’s first slip and goes under the shirt, never over it. The house’s word for it is a diffuser; in Ossel it is , and the cord is the only part of it that wears.

Modelled. None drilled.

The colour is on the inside.

The docket ring

Two parts and a word: a flat grey band, an iodine liner, and , which is the last word of every docket. The colour shows at the rim, from inside, and nowhere else. It is not the Long Sitting Band: that one is the Sodality’s, with nineteen filed notches, catalogued here as A001-OB-033. Both rings stand.

Modelled in three parts. None printed.

Worn at the wrist, under the sleeve.

The hours cuff

A pale shell with an iodine liner, open at one side and closed with a horn pin. Forty-three stitches stand up in the shell of the one that was drawn: thirty-one of them went in in different hands, at different doors, and went in in one.

Modelled in two parts. None printed.
